Enhancing Conversational Moves for Portable Dialogue Systems

چکیده
Spoken dialogue interfaces are nding usage in a number of important applications. Conversational moves are the atoms of the interaction between a user and the computer system. We are building a portable toolkit for constructing dialogue interfaces in diier-ent applications. Portability requires that we endow this toolkit with a wide range of conversational moves. The conversational moves conventionally studied apply well to the speciic applications for which they were designed. However, traditional move-sets are too limited for a number of important situations when more general applications are considered. In particular , they are not well-suited to mixed-initiative dialogue , nor to prolonged dialogue, and lack authoriza-tional, transactional, and presentational primitives to adapt to complex backend information systems. We have developed a fuller set of conversational moves based on the analysis of two diierent domains in database access and on the document retrieval application .

Automating Spoken Dialogue Systems
Spoken dialogue interfaces apply in a number of applications. Engaging in meaningful conversation presupposes the ability to recognize and generate di erent conversational moves, and to adaptively carry on a dialogue. Although the portability of dialogue interfaces is highly desirable, few current approaches address it seriously. We describe a portable toolkit for constructing spoken dialogue i...
متن کاملDisfluent but effective? A quantitative study of disfluencies and conversational moves in team discourse
Situated dialogue systems that interact with humans as part of a team (e.g., robot teammates) need to be able to use information from communication channels to gauge the coordination level and effectiveness of the team. Currently, the feasibility of this end goal is limited by several gaps in both the empirical and computational literature. The purpose of this paper is to address those gaps in ...
متن کاملSimulating Smooth Tutorial Dialogue with Pedagogical Value
This paper describes the design of AutoTutor, a fully automated computer tutor that simulates dialogue moves of normal human tutors and that will eventually incorporate sophisticated tutoring strategies. AutoTutor follows a curriculum script that presents subtopics in di erent forms, such as didactic content, graphic displays, questions, and problems. The tutor selects dialogue moves that assis...
متن کاملConversational Agents
This paper describes a conversational agent for language learning. Our goal is to provide an environment that allows learners to practice language skills by interacting with other learners and artificial conversational agents using instant messaging and email. The learners take part in an adventure story and must use dialogues that are typically found in basal language textbooks to move forward...
متن کاملA Discourse System for Conversational Characters
This paper describes a discourse system for conversational characters used for interactive stories. This system is part of an environment that allows learners to practice language skills by interacting with the characters, other learners, and native speakers using instant messaging and email. The dialogues are not purely task oriented and, as a result, are difficult to model using traditional A...
